Kristina Small
Kristina is a paralympic athlete, having completed in both the Sydney (2000 8th place) and Athens (2004 8th place) Paralympics.
Her participation in the Women's GB Squad spans 6 years and has seen her win a bronze medal (European Championships, Hamburg 2002) and two silver medals (World Cups 2005+2006). She has played in eight major international tournaments.
Despite a late start to her basketball career, Kristina is no stranger to sport. Growing up in a sporty family (including County Badminton Champions, International rowers and a swimming instructor) Kristina has enjoyed success in a variety of disciplines from hockey and tennis to gymnastics and swimming. Even when persistent dislocations of both knees and resulting arthritis, began to prove more debilitating, Kristina searched for a way to continue her sporting achievements.
Finally at the age of 24, Kristina discovered the world of Disability Sport.
After just one session at SWBC Tigers Wheelchair Basketball Club, she was hooked. The adrenalin rush, pace, rough and tumble - it is a fast and furious game - were all dynamic factors that appealed. By the end of the following year, her existing fitness levels and natural sporting ability saw her selected for GB.
Kristina now trains 4-8 times a week either individually or with members of the SWBC Tigers 1st team. She also attends National Squad training camps 1 weekend a month in preparation for Beijing in 2008 and ultimately London in 2012.
Kristina currently lives in Seaford with her two children and works part-time in youth participation and delivering training in Disability Equality.
